Move over New York, Americans love Seattle most

As a born-and-raised New Yorker this article stung a bit, but as a resident of Seattle I am pretty damn proud.

Spring has sprung in Seattle, which means our backyard, a.k.a. my happy place, is officially open for the season!

Does anyone have a time share in Hawaii they can loan me for about the next 3 months?

I may be 32 but everytime I see snow I feel like I am 12 again.

LOVE.

In addition to the Ice Princess and man dressed as Frosty I have witnessed at Sea-Tac, I saw this dude on a unicycle.

Happy holidays, everyone!

Seattle Finally Bans Plastic Bags

As a tote-bag toter for a while now I’m pretty excited about this. After all, every year Washingtonians use more than 2 billion single-use plastic bags and Seattle goes through approximately 292 million, only 13% of which are recycled.

That is a lot of bags for the 13th most populous state. Can you imagine how many are distributed in California (#1), Texas (#2), and New York (#3)?

Right now Eugene (Oregon), Austin (Texas), and Jackson (Wyoming) are all considering similar laws, which is great, but I hope that this initiative spreads to a lot more cities sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, plastic bags don’t need to be outlawed in your town for you to do your part now. By using a reusable tote you’ll protect wildlife and reduce landfill waste. Yes, it’s that simple! Plus, it’s pretty much the easiest 2012 resolution to add to your list—and keep.

Dec 9

If you know me, you know I’m not exactly at the forefront of the ‘cool’ music scene. If you don’t know me, here’s why this is true: I thought I ‘discovered’ MGMT… in 2008. Also, Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits album, discs 1, 2 and 3, are in my top twenty of all time. FYI parents and parents-to-be: this is what happens when you raise your kids on soft rock radio and Melissa Manchester.

Anyway I’m revealing my musical past because I’m finally into a band that I think will be big in the not-too-distant future. Who, you wonder? Pickwick I say, and I’m hooked.

If you’ve not heard of them before well then +1 for me for coolness! But really, + infinity for everyone ‘cause they’re awesome.

At their show last night people were dancing, women were swooning (the lead singer’s voice is, as my dad would say, “really something else”), and wait—did I see spirit fingers? Like me, the crowd was really into them. Where I still remain downright dorky is in how I celebrated my new band-love—by getting misty-eyed because I am that person (thanks, mom!) who is genuinely moved by extraordinary talent.

The clip above isn’t from last night’s performance but I think you’ll see what I’m talking about. If not, there’s always “Uptown Girl.”

Hundreds of local high school students walked out of their classes today to protest education cuts. They then made their way to city hall chanting “no more cuts” and met with Mayor McGinn to discuss their concerns.

Said one 16-year-old: “Our goal is to broadcast a message to Seattle and to Washington state that education is an inherent right and reducing the budget for education not only harms us but harms future generations.”

These kids are bad-ass.
